HISTORY

ABJ Community Services, Inc., (aka) ABJ was founded by Vivian R. Jones in 1992. The agency was incorporated on April 14, 1993. ABJ was named in loving memory of her mother, Annie B. Jones (1926-1979.)

Vivian R. Jones attended eight grammar schools in Chicago during her childhood and became a high school dropout and teenage parent at young age of 15. Today Ms. Jones is a mother of two and holds a Master of Science Degree in Education from Chicago State University.

As a result of her life struggles, Ms. Jones opened ABJ to respond to the needs of her community where she had first hand knowledge of the trials and tribulations faced by people whom society has "written off." Ms. Jones believes that if given an opportunity, every person can become self-sufficient and a contributing citizen of society.

ABJ has enjoyed great success in it's short time of existence and is one of the few agencies founded and run by an African American female. ABJ is accredited by the Council of Accreditation, a national accrediting body for agencies that provide services to families and children.

Today, ABJ serves more than 5000 people per year and has become a front runner in advocating for the people of the community of which it serves.

INSIDE THE AGENCY

ABJ Community Services, Inc. is an accredited 501C (3) community based organization licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services to provide child welfare services. Throughout its history, ABJ programs have been considered a safe haven for families. The agency was founded on the philosophy that family, love, and support are needed for children and adults to improve their overall quality of life. The belief is when these three foundations are in place; families can develop, grow and become contributing citizens.

Since 1994, ABJ Community Services, Inc. has partnered with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services to provide loving foster homes for children that have been removed from their biological families. Foster care has become a vehicle where children can regain hope by being placed in the homes of loving foster parents. ABJ has committed to assist IDCFS in its goal to provide loving homes to all children and through intensive case management services, return children to their biological families when deemed appropriate. ABJ currently serves 700 children in its Foster Care Program.

Foster care services currently offered by ABJ include Foster Care Recruitment, Foster Home Licensing and Training, Case Management Services, Family Reunification, Adoption, and Subsidized Guardianship. Other services provided in the foster care program include: Counseling and Therapeutic Services, Educational Services, Independent Living Preparation, Foster Parent Training, and Parenting Skills Training.

n October of 1997, the Council on Accreditation accredited the agency's Foster Care Program. This is a significant achievement. The standards set by both, IDCFS and COA have increased our ability to provide quality services.

ABJ Community Services, Inc. has remained in compliance with all the rules and regulations mandated by IDCFS and the Council on Accreditation.

ABJ Community Services, Inc. provides the most versatile, professional and supportive individual and group services possible to each client and the community. ABJ has developed programs to meet the needs of the "whole person."
